Your Learning Lab & Short Course Opportunities at Battelle

We’re beyond excited to be participating in this year’s Battelle Conference on the Remediation of Chlorinated and Recalcitrant Compounds in Palm Springs, California! The conference is a truly unique event where the best minds within the environmental engineering and remediation industries come together to discuss important advancements and trends within the industry.
While past Battelle conferences have certainly provided valuable learning experiences for their attendees, the 2018 Battelle conference is particularly special. This year features a new component, the Learning Labs, of which Cascade is presenting two. That’s not all - Cascade is also presenting a Short Course on thermal remediation.
These two components of the conference are valuable because they provide unique, hands-on learning opportunities. In these seminars, you’ll have the chance to speak directly with the experts and see the technologies up close.
So, without further ado, let’s dive into a quick overview of what you can expect by attending Cascade’s Learning Labs and Short Courses at the 2018 Battelle conference.
Located in the main exhibit hall, the Learning Labs consist of hands-on demonstrations highlighting specific technologies, tools, and software. This year, we’re presenting our new Injection Manifold for Liquid Amendments, as part of our WaterlooAPS™ system.
Better Distribution if In Situ Amendments in Groundwater through Better Real-Time Control of Injection

Participants will learn about the latest technology used to facilitate better distribution of in situ amendments in groundwater through controlled injection via real-time controls. Having proper contact of in situ chemicals with contaminant mass is one of the biggest challenges in achieving effective remediation. However, there have been few developments with injection technology since its inception in early 2000. To enhance delivery, a new injection manifold was designed to enhance controlling injection flows and associated pressures to design specifications. We’ll be presenting on this next-generation Smart Injection Manifold, which represents the first real advancement in liquid chemical injection in over 20 years.

The Waterloo Advanced Profiling System (WaterlooAPS) is the next generation of the Waterloo Profiler, first introduced to investigation and remediation professionals in 1994. Developed and tested extensively at the University of Waterloo, in Ontario Canada, the Waterloo Profiler transferred High-Resolution Site Characterization (HRSC) capabilities from the groundwater research community to the wider site investigation industry. Built around the original Waterloo Profiler, the WaterlooAPS is a complete subsurface data collection platform, combining the same high-quality, discrete sampling capability with continuous, real-time hydrostratigraphic logging. This system has been utilized worldwide for the past 20 years in a broad array of environments. Since then, the WaterlooAPS, the premier direct push groundwater profiling tool, has been modified to incorporate additional technologies into the tool string.
The demonstration will cover an overview of the technologies, the rationale for tool selection and how these data can be used to support dynamic high-resolution site characterizations and the development of conceptual site models.

Remediation of Contaminant Mass in Low-Permeability Materials

This short course will provide information specifically related to thermal remediation in low-permeability materials (e.g., clay and fractured rock), including modeling and conceptual site model development for remedial design, as well as the various remediation technologies suitable for such challenging materials.
An in-depth explanation of several thermal technologies will also be provided, including thermal conductive heating (TCH), steam-enhanced extraction (SEE), and electrical resistive heating (ERH), which are often considered as effective alternatives for low-permeability materials and bedrock.
Various environmental fracturing technologies have been demonstrated to effectively facilitate in situ remediation of low-permeability materials. The mechanisms, techniques, and applications of environmental fracturing will be discussed, including the current spectrum of proppant materials, fracture emplacement methodologies, and remedial applications.
As stated earlier, we couldn’t be more excited about participating in this year’s Battelle conference, particularly with regard to these three in-depth learning opportunities. We’re quite proud to be sharing and demonstrating the detailed expertise that Cascade has amassed in our time.
